A.R.C.P.R. Statement

The most destructive idea in the history of the Birmingham Roller, is the idea that the Birmingham Roller is defined as a breed solely by what it does in the air. – Austin J. Benjamin

Lewis Wright wrote in regards to the Birmingham Roller – “The true Birmingham Roller, which turns backwards with inconceivable rapidity through a considerable distance like a spinning ball”. Lewis Wrights descriptive statement is a wonderful way to illustrate the performance of the Birmingham Roller. This statement has been misinterpreted since the rise of the rare colored performing roller, in a movement as early as the 1940’s, USA. Wrights statement is wielded by many as the only necessary defining characteristic a Birmingham Roller could possess, irregardless of a crossbred heritage. Wright in his statement does not imply that these attributes are what makes a pigeon a Birmingham Roller. It only implies his descriptors are what Birmingham Rollers do. The Birmingham Roller was an established breed by 1840, and was simultaneously defined as a breed based on its progenitors. The PRC maintains that any lineage crossed for a color or modifier unoriginal to the Birmingham Roller, or crossed for any reason at all, is not Birmingham Roller lineage. The Pensom Roller club describes the variety that appeared from the rare colored performing roller movement, as the A.R.C.P.R. (American Rare Colored Performing Roller) The Pensom Roller Club recognizes them as a breed separate to the Birmingham Roller.
